Superintelligence
Nick Bostrom’s Superintelligence is a landmark exploration of one of the most important questions of our time: what happens if machines surpass human intelligence?
Bostrom lays out several paths by which artificial intelligence could reach “superintelligence” an intelligence far beyond the best human minds in every field. These paths include advanced machine learning, whole-brain emulation, or networks of specialized systems. Once superintelligence arises, he argues, it could become dominant because of its ability to self-improve and outthink humanity.
The book’s central concern is the “control problem”. How can we ensure a super-intelligent AI’s goals align with human values? Bostrom warns that misaligned objectives, even if subtle, could lead to catastrophic outcomes not out of malice, but because a machine pursuing its programmed goals might disregard human survival as incidental.
He explores strategies for aligning AI, from designed incentives to governance structures, but stresses that the challenge is unprecedented. Because we may only have one chance to get it right, Bostrom calls for global cooperation, foresight, and humility in developing AI.
I read many books before writing my novel, The Entity, which dramatized some problems discussed in his book. If this book is good enough for Bill Gates, it’s going to be on my reading list. I would encourage you to give it a read. It offers a lot of food for thought.
